Try That In A Small Town

As I sat down for breakfast and watched The View like I usually do every weekday morning, the topic of a song by country music crooner Jason Aldean called Try That In A Small Town. Apparently, this song has stirred up a huge ruckus among music listeners including accusations of the racist nature of its presentation. Vloggers near and far have stated their opinions, for and against this infamous tune.

Being the armchair journalist that I claim to be, I decided to not be influenced by either point of view; I chose to take a look and listen, with captions on, to the official video of the song by Mr. Aldean.

There you have it.

What are my thoughts?

In all honesty, I found both the lyrics and especially the visuals in the videos rather disturbing, to say the least.

For starters, the video is definitely for those on the political right, which may be expected from this music genre. Strong statements for gun rights (I’m a big supporter of the Second Amendment if executed properly), which was to be expected.

Expressions of love for Old Glory and the United States? Check.

Reference to modest and humble modus vevindi? Check.

Now the fun begins.

In my very humble opinion, the video contains thinly-veiled racial and political threats of violent retaliation. The video also strongly implies that only one particular type of individual incites and facilitates violence and lawlessness. Typical selective memory.

Once again in my humble and finite opinion, the video is a dog whistle casserole, and depending on who you ask, it comes as one of the worst times in America. The racial divide is at its widest since the Jim Crow days and for this to be occurring in the 21st century, this is downright frightening.

Meh, I have nothing else. At least for now.

What are YOUR thoughts about this song?

Sesame Street and the Wicked Witch of the West

It’s no surprise that Oscar the Grouch was swooning over the Wicked Witch of the West.

Just recently, I’ve been reading about a so-called banned episode, Episode 847, of Sesame Street. The late Margaret Hamilton, the actress who portrayed the Wicked Witch of the West (referred to as the Witch for the duration of this blog) in the 1939 film adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, reprised her role as the mean ol’ Witch to appear as the antagonist on this 1976 episode of Sesame Street.

All hell breaks loose.

Apparently, angry parents were not amused by their young kids being frightened from watching, at the time, the number one children’s program on American television.

The parents wrote indignant letters directed to the Children’s Television Workshop (now called Sesame Workshop) and the show creators, Joan Ganz and the late Lloyd Morrisett. Needless to say, they had a mess to clean up.

After a series of events, the powers that be decided to never air this particular episode ever again, and it was shelved, supposedly for perpetuity.

Fast forward to 2019, when this infamous episode reared its scary head at a “Lost and Found” event at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, New York, to celebrate the Sesame Street franchise’s 50th anniversary.

Three years later in 2022, Episode 847 was “leaked” online, via Reddit and the hysteria went from there.

Here’s the thing: when this particular episode originally aired on Tuesday, February 10, 1976, I was six years old and in the first grade. I was in school that day, so I missed the episodes airing. In fact, I had no idea that such an event even happened until 40 years later!

I decided to take a walk on the wild side and watch this episode to see watch the buzz was about. Was the controversy overhype or were there legitimate concerns from parents?

Here it is for your viewing pleasure…

What do you think? Was it as bad as parents said it was or was it simple hyperbole? You be the judge.

Man Confronts His High School Bully

In my time in school, I’ve had my fair share of bullies/tormentors.

How would I react if I were to encounter one of those individuals in the pitiful shape as this fella in this tweet? I honestly have no idea. However, while I would behave as the victim did in this video, I would have a mental smirk going on for sure.

Lord, help your child.

My One Year Clotiversary

One week prior to my diagnosis, I noticed that I was getting very weak. Not weakness from being tired, but unusually weak (I thought) without cause.

I also had a nagging light caught and I was constantly clearing m throat. I began to presume that I have acquired the coronavirus, so I started doctoring myself with the hope I would feel better. About a few days later, I felt somewhat better, but there were more ominous things to come.

I fainted for the first time on Wednesday. I woke up and figured that I simply had a really bad panic attack and brushed it off. However, I started to become lightheaded to the point that I could only walk a few yards before I had to sit down. As a result, I decided to call it an early day and stay in my bedroom for the remainder of the day.

The next day on Thursday, I woke up feeling somewhat better, but that same funny headache-thingy feeling was still on the crown of my head. Despite that feeling, I was able to get around pretty easily without feeling faint.

Hours later, I fainted three times.

I also live alone.

At this point, it was a no-brainer to dial 911. It took the EMTs to come in and get me off the floor. My blood pressure was 69/57, so it was pretty obvious that I need to go to the emergency room.

From Thursday night until Friday afternoon, they were fighting to save my life. Eventually, the doctors discovered a massive saddle pulmonary embolism in both my lungs. They gave me three options on how to be treated: Medication, a medically induced coma/life-support, or the procedure through my groin.

I choose the procedure.

I was half awake during the procedure. I even heard one of the surgeons say’ “Would you look at that” the clots were removed.

The surgery was a success and the staff was very pleased, but no one was more pleased than I was!

One of the surgeons showed me a picture of what they yanked out of me and I was astonished. He sent me a copy and I carry it around as a badge of honor. I would show it to you all, but I don’t know how strong your stomachs are LOL

All in all, I thank the Lord for bringing me through that life-changing ordeal. I’m still healing, I’m on Coumadin, and I walk like a giant toddler. Please don’t get me started on the mental and emotional effects.

I do apologize for such a lengthy dissertation, but I just had to tell my story. In any case, I thank you for taking to time to read about my story.

(By the way, the pic on the left is AFTER the surgery; I looked far worse before the surgery)

How Was My 2022?

At the beginning of 2022, things were so different…

While I wasn’t in perfect health, I believed I was in fair physical shape. Three of my friends were just either a phone call or text away. Lastly, I was in a relationship; the first I’ve had since the beginning of the pandemic.

However, by the end of 2022…

A massive pulmonary embolism nearly killed me and I have some long-term effects as a result. The three friends I mentioned earlier have now crossed over from time to eternity. I am now, for all intents and purposes, single and alone.

I apologize to you all for writing such a dispiriting and self-pitying end-of-the-year post.

On the flip side, there has been a lot of good that has happened in 2022: My podcast/broadcast is prospering, I have a few more dollars in my pocket and I’m eating like a horse, most importantly, I still have my immediate family.

Nonetheless, this year has been one for the books, but I made it. It hasn’t been easy, but I made it. Survivors’ remorse tried to get me down, but I made it. Several medical and personal setbacks tried to stop me, but guess what…I MADE IT!

Educator Dr. Steve Perry posted a tweet about being in a similar, albeit far more critical situation in 2022. The last sentence of his post brought me to tears…

Like the songwriter, Cody Johnson wrote:

“Oh Lord, I can’t even walk without you holding my hand

Oh Lord, I can’t even walk without you holding my hand”

The mountains too high and the valleys too wide

Down on my knees that’s where I learned to stand

As I always say, I don’t know what tomorrow holds, but I know Who holds tomorrow. Thank you all so much for your presence and may you and yours have a blessed and prosperous 2023.
